Broadcast e-mail services

E-mail newsletters are an affordable and effective way to communicate with customers and clients.

Many businesses use them because they know that their audience is receptive and responsive to their message but sending huge numbers of e-mails can be time consuming and even illegal if done the wrong way.

Your options

Basically there are two ways to send e-mail in bulk.

The first is via your PC and an e-mail client such as Outlook Express or Mail.

This is certainly the wrong way to do it as it doesn’t allow you to track results, handle subscriptions, keep your lists up-to-date or handle bounces, to name but a few!

In the UK you are also legally obliged to have a built in Unsubscribe facility as defined by The Office of The Information Commissioner. Sending email from your PC doesn’t enable this.

The second is by using hosted broadcast e-mail software.

This is the service I offer all my clients and has the following benefits.

• Double opt-in subscription facility
  Subscribers are sent en e-mail with a link they have to click to confirm their subscription. This means they really want your e-mail newsletter.
• Built-in unsubscribe facility
  All e-mails have a link within them which recipients can click to opt-out of all future e-mails. A legal requirement in the UK and all taken care of for you.
• Potential unlimited volume
  Depending on your account you can send almost any number of e-mails.
• Extensive, in-depth text and graphical reports
  All accounts enable you to track how many e-mails were opened, their click through rates, who has unsubscribed, forwarding rates and more.
• Ability to add custom subscriber fields
  You can add a form to your website which enables you to gather the subscription details you require. Less often works better but the choice is there to add what you need.
• Automatic bounce management
  This means that any any e-mail address which returns a message such as “No longer valid” will be flagged as such and eventually removed from the list after so many bounces.

Why you should consider this

Apart from it being a very effective way of keeping in touch with customers and letting them know about your latest offers etc, broadcast e-mail just makes the whole process easier.

I add a subscription form to your website, people sign up to your newsletter and you’re off.
